Women Veterans Recognition Week was created in 2014 in NE Florida to celebrate the accomplishments as well as bring community awareness of the challenges of women veterans. This is during the third week of March to coincide of with Women’s history month. The week was filled with events every day of the week culminating in a Recognition Gala honoring WWII and Korean War era women veterans. That first year, the Jacksonville city mayor issued a city Proclamation recognizing the week of events. Eight WWII women veterans attended and were honored as “rock stars” for the evening. Since that night, the event has grown to include Vietnam era women veterans and the annual “Women Who Rock” award. In 2015, the Governor issued the first state proclamation making the third week of march the “Women Veterans Week of Recognition” and has done so each year leading up to 2020. In 2018, the state-recognized celebration received a Congressional Proclamation. An effort to make this a national observance is ongoing.
The planning committee is comprised of women veterans and community partners. In 2021, our hope is to have the largest celebration ever!
